Mendocino County Weighs First Private Markets Allocation
Mendocino County Employees' Retirement Association trustees are considering whether the $931.6M pension should make its first allocation to illiquid strategies, with the plan currently holding no private equity or private credit exposure against annual outflows of roughly 1% of the portfolio. Consultant Callan is leading the board through a monthly education series on liquidity and asset class fundamentals ahead of a March 2027 asset-liability study expected to determine the plan's entry into those asset classes.
Among other allocators, the Virginia Retirement System disclosed approximately $2.2B in new manager commitments since June 18 spanning private equity, real assets, credit strategies, diversifying strategies and public equity, alongside the termination of its AQR Market Neutral Value Fund position and the closure of a $581M Eminence Capital allocation. Elsewhere, the Teachers' Retirement System of the City of New York, NYCERS, and the city's police and fire pension funds committed a combined $300M to the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust, making the four systems collectively the trust's largest investor.
In GP fundraising, Blue Sea Capital recently held a first close on its fourth flagship fund at $375M, having shifted the vehicle to a healthcare-only strategy; the move coincides with the spinout of Reefline Capital, a new firm formed from Blue Sea's industrial growth and aerospace and defense practice. Separately, Patient Square Capital filed to raise a second dedicated therapeutics vehicle, Patient Square Therapeutics II, without disclosing a target, while Blackstone Strategic Partners began fundraising for a ninth real estate secondaries fund following its predecessor's $2.6B close in 2023.
In leadership developments, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation promoted Abigail Kahn Archibald to CIO from deputy CIO, succeeding Scott Taylor; she will oversee the foundation's $7.8B endowment. And Border to Coast Pensions Partnership named Chris Cooper as head of real estate, joining from DTZ Investors, where he served as global CEO.
